Kauri Ridge is positioned high above New Zealand’s Bay of Islands, within 56 hectares of regenerating native forest and open coastal grassland. The residence is approached slowly along the ridge and appears as a sequence of timber roofs floating above stone terraces rather than one dominant object.

Three pavilions separate shared life, private suites and guests. The central living room opens on both sides to a sheltered court and broad ocean terrace, while six suites are placed for privacy and distinct views. A detached studio and library pavilion can support work, collection display or longer guest stays.

The landscape plan is integral to the property. Former pasture is being replanted with native species, freshwater systems are monitored, and built areas are tightly concentrated. Reclaimed tōtara, locally sourced volcanic stone and bronze were selected to weather gracefully in the maritime climate. A conservation covenant protects the most ecologically valuable parts of the land.
